ANTALYA — 2006 · Major Tragedy
2006 Antalya Bombing
On 28 August 2006, a bomb hidden on a parked motorcycle exploded in a shopping area in central Antalya. Three people were killed and dozens were injured, including foreign tourists. The blast came a day after four bombs in Marmaris, Muğla, and in Istanbul injured 27 people, including British tourists. The PKK-linked group TAK claimed the Marmaris and Istanbul attacks and warned that attacks on tourist areas would continue. Coming in the middle of the tourist season, the attacks led to tighter security along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts and to travel warnings from foreign governments. The Antalya bombing was the deadliest of the wave of attacks on tourist centres in the summer of 2006.
