ISPARTA — 2007 · Major Tragedy
Atlasjet Flight 4203 Crash
On the night of 30 November 2007, Atlasjet Flight 4203, an MD-83 flying from Istanbul to Isparta, struck mountainous terrain at Türbetepe in the Keçiborlu district while approaching Isparta Süleyman Demirel Airport. All 57 people on board, 50 passengers and 7 crew, were killed. The investigation attributed the crash to a navigation error by the crew, and also found that the aircraft's ground proximity warning system and cockpit voice recorder had not been working for some time. In the trial opened in 2009, eight defendants were convicted in 2015 and the others acquitted. After the Court of Cassation overturned the ruling, the case was retried and was finally closed with a binding verdict roughly 17 years after the crash. It remains one of the accidents most often cited in debates over civil aviation oversight in Turkey.
