VĨNH LONG — 2007 · Major Tragedy
The Cần Thơ Bridge Collapse
At about 8 am on 26 September 2007, a 90-metre approach section of the Cần Thơ Bridge, then under construction over the Hậu River in the Mekong Delta, collapsed from a height of more than 30 metres on the Vĩnh Long side. Around 250 engineers and workers were on or beneath the span at the time. According to the Vietnamese government, 54 people were killed and 80 seriously injured. An eight-month official inquiry identified the uneven sinking of the foundation of a temporary pier as the main cause. Police opened a criminal investigation into breaches of construction regulations. The project, led by a Japanese consortium, was completed late and the bridge opened to traffic in April 2010.
