ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 18 November 2007 a methane explosion tore through the Zasyadko coal mine in Donetsk more than 1,000 metres underground. There were 457 miners below ground at the time. By the end of the month the death toll had reached 101, making it the deadliest mining accident in Ukraine's history. Investigators suspected that safety equipment may have been tampered with to keep production going. Two further explosions hit the same section on 1 and 2 December; the second killed at least five more workers. President Viktor Yushchenko signed a decree ordering an investigation.
