BANGKOK — 2009 · Major Tragedy
The Santika Nightclub Fire
In the first minutes of 1 January 2009 a fire broke out during New Year celebrations at the Santika Pub nightclub in Bangkok's Ekkamai district. Pyrotechnics used on stage were reported to have ignited flammable material in the ceiling. The fire quickly engulfed the venue; with inadequate emergency exits, hundreds of people crowded at narrow doors. Sixty-seven people were killed and 222 injured, including foreign nationals. Investigators found the club had been operating in breach of fire-safety rules. The club's operator was sentenced to prison by a trial court in 2011, acquitted on appeal in 2013, and in November 2015 the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal and imposed a three-year sentence. After the disaster Thailand tightened safety inspections of entertainment venues.
