CONAKRY — 2009 · Murder
The 28 September Stadium Massacre
On 28 September 2009 some 50,000 people gathered at the 28 September Stadium in Conakry, Guinea, to protest against junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara's intention to stand for election. Security forces opened fire on the crowd; at least 157 people were killed and more than 1,200 injured. A UN inquiry documented severe sexual violence against dozens of women and concluded the events amounted to crimes against humanity. Soldiers were alleged to have buried some bodies in secret. The long-delayed trial opened on the 13th anniversary in 2022. On 31 July 2024 Camara was sentenced to 20 years for crimes against humanity, but in March 2025 he was pardoned by the junta leader.
