The "Aluu Four" Lynching
On 5 October 2012, in the village of Aluu in Rivers State, four young students of the University of Port Harcourt were lynched by a mob after being falsely accused of theft. Mobile phone footage of the killing spread online, provoking nationwide outrage and protests against Nigeria's culture of mob "jungle justice". Several people, including a police sergeant, were tried. On 31 July 2017 the Rivers State High Court sentenced the police sergeant and two others to death, and acquitted four defendants against whom the charges were not proven.
