Murder of Iniubong Umoren

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Iniubong Umoren, a 26-year-old philosophy graduate of the University of Uyo, went to meet a man who had offered her a job over social media while she was job-hunting in April 2021, and never returned. An appeal launched by her friends online quickly became a national story. Investigators found she had been taken to a family home in Uruan, killed and buried there. On 4 August 2022 the Akwa Ibom State High Court convicted the defendant of rape and murder, sentencing him to death and to life imprisonment; his father and sister were acquitted. The case triggered a strong public reaction against violence towards women in Nigeria.
