2021 Rize Floods
On 14 July 2021 torrential rain over the eastern Black Sea caused floods and landslides in Rize. Streams burst their banks in several districts, especially Ardeşen, Pazar and Güneysu, damaging roads, bridges and settlements; some houses were buried by landslides. Some of the people first reported missing were later found dead. Six people were killed, and the search for two missing people went on for a long time. The floods renewed debate on construction close to stream beds in the narrow Black Sea valleys and on preparedness for heavy rain. The disaster caused deaths in several districts of Rize on the same day.
