2021 Bozkurt Flood Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 11 August 2021 heavy rain over the western Black Sea caused major floods in Kastamonu, Sinop and Bartın. The worst destruction was in Bozkurt, Kastamonu, where the Ezine stream burst its banks; many buildings, including multi-storey apartment blocks, collapsed or were badly damaged. Sixty-five people died in Bozkurt and 72 across Kastamonu; according to AFAD the total death toll in the region, including Sinop, reached 77. The disaster raised questions about construction close to the stream bed and the precautions not taken; the district governor of Bozkurt was removed from office. When the Ezine stream overflowed, the streets of the town centre were flooded. There were also deaths in Küre, İnebolu and Çatalzeytin.
