1943 Tosya–Ladik Earthquake

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 27 November 1943 a major earthquake struck along the North Anatolian Fault, on a long stretch from Tosya in Kastamonu to Ladik in Samsun. Kandilli Observatory recorded its magnitude as 7.2, and it caused destruction over a wide area from Tosya to Ladik. Because it struck at night, many people were caught asleep. Death tolls differ by source: Kandilli Observatory records list about 4,000 dead and tens of thousands of damaged buildings, while some international sources speak of more than 2,500 deaths. The quake was part of the destructive sequence that moved westward along the North Anatolian Fault between 1939 and 1944.
