ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 20 December 1942 a powerful earthquake recorded at magnitude 7.0 struck the Erbaa and Niksar districts of Tokat and the surrounding area. Regarded as one link in the westward sequence of earthquakes on the North Anatolian Fault that began with the 1939 Erzincan earthquake, it caused the heaviest destruction in Erbaa. According to Kandilli Observatory records about 3,000 people died and tens of thousands of buildings were damaged. Striking in winter, during the hard economic years of the Second World War, the earthquake led to a long rebuilding process in the region. According to Kandilli records it struck at 16:03 local time and was also felt in neighbouring provinces.
