1944 Bolu–Gerede Earthquake
At 05:22 on 1 February 1944 a major earthquake struck the North Anatolian Fault between Gerede in Bolu and Çerkeş in Çankırı. Kandilli Observatory recorded it at magnitude 7.2, and because it hit in midwinter before dawn it caused heavy loss of life. According to Kandilli Observatory records 3,959 people died and 20,865 buildings were destroyed or damaged. Bolu, Gerede, Çerkeş and the surrounding villages were the worst affected. The quake is considered one of the last major links in the great North Anatolian sequence that began in Erzincan in 1939 and moved westward. Winter conditions also hampered relief work.
