ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At 12:59 on 19 April 1938 a destructive earthquake with a magnitude given as about 6.6-6.7 struck Kırşehir and its surroundings. The epicentre lay between Kırşehir and Kaman, and it was one of the most destructive earthquakes in Central Anatolia. Most adobe and stone buildings in rural settlements collapsed or were badly damaged, and thousands of buildings became unusable (KOERI lists 4,066 destroyed). Sources put the death toll at between 160 and 224. Because it struck a part of Central Anatolia then considered relatively quiet seismically, the earthquake was also scientifically significant. The earthquake struck at midday.
