The Correggio Serial Murders

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

In 1939–1940, three middle-aged women disappeared in quick succession from the town of Correggio in the province of Reggio Emilia. All had been in contact with the same local woman, who had promised to arrange jobs or marriages for them in other cities. An inquiry prompted by relatives of the last woman to vanish led to her arrest, and she confessed to the three killings, citing superstitious beliefs about protecting her son, who was due to serve in the Second World War. Tried in Reggio Emilia in 1946, she received 30 years in prison and three years in a criminal asylum; she died in the asylum at Pozzuoli in 1970. The press dubbed her 'the Soap-Maker of Correggio'.
