2020 Giresun–Dereli Floods

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 22 August 2020 torrential rain in Giresun caused floods in the provincial centre and several districts, above all Dereli. Overflowing streams destroyed bridges, roads, homes and shops, and the town centre of Dereli was badly damaged. Eleven people died, including five gendarmerie personnel on rescue and security duty, and three people went missing and were never found. Reconstruction began after the disaster, and within two years hundreds of homes and shops had been handed over to those entitled to them. The floods revived debate in the eastern Black Sea region over building in stream beds and disaster preparedness.
