ADDIS ABABA — 2020 · Murder
The Killing of Singer Hachalu Hundessa
Hachalu Hundessa, one of the best-loved Oromo singers and a symbol of the struggle for political rights, was shot dead in his car on the evening of 29 June 2020 in the Gelan Condominiums area on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Born in 1986, his songs had become anthems of the protests that led to a change of government in 2018. News of his death set off major protests and ethnic violence in the Oromia region and the capital, in which about 160 people died and thousands were detained. The authorities said they had arrested suspects and opened a prosecution, but the motive and who was ultimately behind the killing remain disputed.
