ADDIS ABABA — 2017 · Major Tragedy
Koshe Landfill Landslide
On the evening of 11 March 2017 part of a huge mound at Addis Ababa's 50-year-old Koshe rubbish dump collapsed onto the neighbourhood built at its foot. Hundreds of poor families who made a living collecting recyclables lived in shacks and houses directly beneath the mounds. Days of searching recovered the bodies of 115 people. Residents blamed the resumption of dumping after a pause of several years and construction of a nearby biogas plant that had disturbed the ground. The government declared three days of mourning, promised to resettle residents and announced plans to turn the site into a park.
