The 14 October 2017 Mogadishu Truck Bombing
On 14 October 2017 a truck packed with explosives detonated at a busy junction near the Safari Hotel in the Hodan district of Mogadishu, Somalia. A fuel tanker nearby caught fire and magnified the blast. About half an hour later a second explosion followed. At least 587 people were killed and 316 injured, with hundreds more missing. Officials believed the intended target was the airport compound housing the UN, embassies and the African Union mission, and blamed al-Shabaab. In February 2018 a military court sentenced the driver of the second vehicle to death; he was executed on the first anniversary of the attack. It is the deadliest attack in Somalia's history.
