The Willie Kimani case
In June 2016, in Kenya, human rights lawyer and activist Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and their taxi driver Joseph Muiruri were abducted and killed. Kimani had been representing his client, who alleged he had been shot by police. The case brought international attention to debate within the country over extrajudicial killings. The court sentenced the police officer identified as having planned the killing to death separately for each of the three deaths; the other two officers received 30 and 24 years in prison.
