The Kware Quarry Murders

Under InvestigationSources: BLast updated: 14 October 2026

In July 2024 the bodies of numerous women, wrapped in sacks, were found in the disused Kware quarry in Nairobi's Mukuru kwa Njenga informal settlement. The discovery fuelled protests and deep mistrust of the police, who were asked how a nearby station had noticed nothing; all officers there were transferred. Days later police said a detained suspect had confessed to killing 42 women since 2022, though human rights groups questioned the circumstances of the confession. On 20 August 2024 the suspect escaped from the cells at Gigiri police station along with 12 others; investigators suspected an inside job and officers were suspended. The case remains unresolved.
