MITSERO — 2019 · Serial Murder
The Mitsero Serial Killings
In April 2019, after unusually heavy rain, a woman's body was found in an abandoned mine shaft near the village of Mitsero in Cyprus. Over the following three months further victims were found at various sites around the Mitsero mining area, including the "Red Lake". The investigation found that seven people, five foreign women and two children, had been killed between September 2016 and August 2018. The perpetrator, a Greek Cypriot army officer, pleaded guilty in June 2019 and received seven life sentences, the heaviest penalty in the island's history. Following criticism that police had ignored missing-person reports about migrant women, the police chief was dismissed and the justice minister resigned.
