GDAŃSK — 2019 · Murder
The Assassination of Mayor Paweł Adamowicz
On the evening of 13 January 2019 Gdańsk mayor Paweł Adamowicz was stabbed on stage at a charity event in the city centre held as part of an annual national fundraising campaign. He died in hospital the next day. The attacker was detained at the scene. After a roughly three-year investigation and a year-long trial, a court sentenced him to life imprisonment in March 2023, the judge calling it an unprecedented murder in Polish history. The verdict was upheld on appeal in January 2024. The killing intensified debate in Poland about political polarisation and hate speech.
