COPENHAGEN — 2017 · Murder
The Kim Wall case
On 10 August 2017, 30-year-old Swedish freelance journalist Kim Wall boarded a homemade submarine built by a Danish inventor to conduct an interview she had been pursuing for months; she was never seen alive again. The following day the submarine was deliberately sunk. The defendant first claimed he had dropped the journalist off ashore, then that she had died in an accident. The Copenhagen City Court found that the killing had been planned and gave the defendant life imprisonment, the most severe sentence available under Danish law. The case remained prominent in the Nordic region for a long time and prompted debate over journalists' safety in the field.
