WOLFHAGEN — 2019 · Murder
The Assassination of Walter Lübcke
Walter Lübcke, regional president of Kassel, was shot dead on the terrace of his home in Wolfhagen-Istha on the night of 1-2 June 2019. He had become a target of the far right after defending the admission of refugees in 2015. Two weeks later a far-right extremist was arrested after DNA traces linked him to the scene. In January 2021 the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court sentenced him to life imprisonment, while a co-defendant was acquitted of aiding the murder. The Federal Court of Justice upheld the verdict in August 2022. It was recorded as the first killing of a German politician by a far-right extremist since 1945.
