SOEST — 2017 · Murder
The Murder of Anne Faber
Anne Faber, 25, failed to return from a bike ride she set out on from Utrecht on 29 September 2017. One of the largest searches in Dutch history followed, with thousands of volunteers combing woodland. About two weeks later her body was found near Soest after a detained suspect directed police to it. The perpetrator had prior convictions for serious crimes and was on supervised leave from psychiatric custody at the time. In July 2018 he was sentenced to 28 years plus TBS (compulsory psychiatric treatment); the appeal court upheld the sentence in 2019. The case sparked a fierce national debate about leave for dangerous offenders and led to tighter rules.
