The Murder of Former Minister Els Borst

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Els Borst, the Netherlands' former Health Minister and one of the architects of its euthanasia law, was found dead at her home in Bilthoven on 8 February 2014. At first there were no leads. In January 2015 it was announced that the DNA of a man detained over the killing of his own sister matched a trace from the Borst murder. The perpetrator said he had targeted Borst because of euthanasia policy, acting on a delusional sense of 'mission'. In 2016 he was convicted of both killings and placed in TBS (compulsory psychiatric treatment) because of psychosis. In 2017 the Hague appeal court found him partially responsible and set the sentence at eight years plus TBS.
