Narayanganj Seven Murders
On 27 April 2014, seven people, including a Narayanganj city councillor who served as panel mayor and a senior lawyer, were abducted on the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road. Days later their bodies were found in the Shitalakshya River. The investigation found that the killings had been planned and carried out by a local politician together with officers of the elite Rapid Action Battalion's RAB-11 unit. In January 2017 a Narayanganj court sentenced 26 defendants to death. In August 2017 the High Court upheld the death sentences of 15, including three forcibly retired senior RAB-11 officers, and commuted 11 to life imprisonment. The case was seen as a landmark for the accountability of security forces in Bangladesh.
