Murder of Abrar Fahad

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Abrar Fahad, a second-year electrical and electronic engineering student at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten for hours and killed on the night of 6 October 2019 in his residence, Sher-e-Bangla Hall, by students belonging to the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the then ruling party. The attack reportedly followed a Facebook post in which Fahad criticised water-sharing agreements with India. The killing set off student protests across the country, and BUET banned political organising on campus. In December 2021 a speedy trial tribunal in Dhaka sentenced 20 defendants to death and five to life imprisonment; the High Court upheld the sentences in March 2025.
