Tazreen Fashions Factory Fire

Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the evening of 24 November 2012, a fire at the nine-storey Tazreen Fashions garment factory in Ashulia, on Dhaka's northern outskirts, killed at least 112 workers (117 according to some sources) and injured more than 200. The blaze was thought to have started from a short circuit on the ground floor. The building lacked adequate emergency exits, and many workers were trapped on the upper floors. The factory produced for international brands, and the fire put workplace safety in global supply chains on the agenda; together with the Rana Plaza collapse a few months later, it marked the start of sector reforms. A negligence case was filed against the owner and managers in 2013, but the trial has remained unfinished for more than a decade.
