GIGLIO — 2012 · Major Tragedy

The Costa Concordia Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the evening of 13 January 2012, the cruise ship Costa Concordia, at the start of a Mediterranean cruise with more than 4,200 people aboard, deviated from its route to perform a close 'salute' sail-by and struck a rock off the Italian island of Giglio. With its hull torn open, the ship listed and settled near the shore. Most people were rescued during a six-hour evacuation, but 32 died, and a diver was later killed during the salvage. The captain was accused of abandoning ship while hundreds of passengers were still aboard; in 2015 he was sentenced to 16 years in prison on charges including manslaughter, and the verdict became final in 2017. The giant wreck was refloated in 2014, towed to Genoa and scrapped.
