The Crash of Dana Air Flight 992

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 3 June 2012 a Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 flying from Abuja to Lagos crashed onto buildings in the densely populated Lagos district of Iju-Ishaga during its approach. All 153 people on board and 6 on the ground were killed. The Accident Investigation Bureau's final report, published in 2017, found that both engines lost power in turn and that the crew failed to use the checklist, did not grasp the seriousness of the problem and did not land at the nearest suitable airport. It also highlighted maintenance and oversight failings. The crash raised questions about safety oversight in Nigerian aviation.
