LAGOS — 2002 · Major Tragedy
Ikeja Armoury Explosion
On the evening of 27 January 2002 a fire in a market beside the military barracks in Lagos's Ikeja district spread to the base's main munitions store, setting off heavy bombs and explosives for hours. The blasts shattered windows kilometres away and tore roofs off many homes. Thousands of people fleeing in panic in the dark failed to see a vegetation-covered canal at Oke-Afa, and most of the dead drowned there. In all, more than 1,000 people died and tens of thousands were left homeless. An inquiry found the army had neglected the depot and failed to act on instructions the previous year to modernise or decommission it.
