The Killing of Dagbon King Yakubu II
Yakubu II, ruler (Ya-Na) of the Dagbon kingdom in northern Ghana, was killed in March 2002 at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi during the decades-old succession conflict between the Abudu and Andani royal families. Around 30 other people died alongside the king in three days of violence. A government-appointed body, the Wuaku Commission, investigated the events and a number of people were tried, but in May 2011 a court in Accra acquitted all the accused. Nobody has been jailed. The killing remained a source of tension in the region for years, with a peace process continuing until a new king was enthroned in 2019.
