The Richthofen Case

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the night of 31 October 2002, engineer Manfred von Richthofen and his wife Marísia were killed at their home in São Paulo. It was first staged to look like a burglary, but the alarm having been switched off from inside and signs pointing to people who knew the house well led investigators to the couple's daughter, Suzane von Richthofen. After police surveillance, Suzane, her boyfriend and his older brother were detained on 9 November 2002 and confessed. At a jury trial in July 2006, Suzane and her boyfriend received 39 years and 6 months, and his brother 38 years. Suzane was released on parole in 2023. The case became one of Brazil's most discussed family murders.
