The Kidnapping and Murder of Cecilia Cubas
Cecilia Cubas, the 31-year-old daughter of former president Raúl Cubas, was kidnapped by armed men near Asunción on 21 September 2004 as she drove home. The kidnappers negotiated by email; having first demanded $5 million, they cut off contact after receiving an $800,000 ransom in November 2004. Her body was found on 16 February 2005 beneath a house near Asunción. The investigation led to members of a small left-wing party, and it was established that the kidnappers had received training and advice from Colombia's FARC. Twenty people were sentenced to 35 years each, but some perpetrators remained at large and later joined the EPP guerrilla group.
