VILLA YGATIMÍ — 2014 · Murder
The Murder of Journalist Pablo Medina
Pablo Medina, the Canindeyú correspondent for the newspaper ABC Color, reported on drug production in the border region and its links to local politicians. On 16 October 2014, near Villa Ygatimí, his vehicle was stopped on the way back from a story and he was shot; his young assistant was also killed. The investigation pointed to a former mayor of Ypejhú as the mastermind. The former mayor, who had fled to Brazil, was extradited and in December 2017 was sentenced to 29 years in prison plus 10 years of security measures; the verdict was upheld in 2018. It was the first case in Paraguay in which the mastermind of a journalist's murder was convicted.
