The Murder of Eliza Samudio
Model Eliza Samudio was fighting for recognition of paternity and child support for her child with Bruno Fernandes, captain and goalkeeper of Flamengo. In June 2010 she went to Bruno's farm in Esmeraldas, Minas Gerais, and was never seen again. Her body was never found; nevertheless, witness statements and other evidence were deemed sufficient for a murder case. In November 2012 the goalkeeper's close friend received 15 years in prison. On 8 March 2013 a jury in Contagem sentenced Bruno to 22 years for the kidnapping and murder of Samudio. The case, one of the biggest murder files involving a famous footballer, caused deep debate in Brazil.
