The 2010 World Cup Final Bombings in Kampala
On 11 July 2010, as crowds watched the World Cup final, suicide bombs exploded at two sites in Kampala: a packed screening at the Kyadondo Rugby Club and the Ethiopian Village restaurant in Kabalagala. The attacks killed 74 people and injured many more. The Somalia-based group al-Shabaab claimed them in retaliation for Uganda sending troops to the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia; it was the group's first major attack outside Somalia. After a long trial, seven defendants were convicted of terrorism and murder in May 2016; five received life sentences and two 50 years, while five were acquitted.
