KAMPALA — 2018 · Murder
Murder of Susan Magara
Susan Magara, 28, was abducted in Kampala's Lungujja district on 7 February 2018. The next day her kidnappers contacted her family, initially demanding a ransom of 1 to 1.5 million dollars; after negotiations her father paid around 200,000 dollars. She was nevertheless killed in late February 2018 after nearly three weeks in captivity. The case provoked a strong reaction in Uganda against ransom kidnappings and criticism of the security forces. After years of proceedings, Kampala's High Court convicted nine defendants of kidnapping and murder on 4 August 2026, and the next day sentenced two to death and seven to life imprisonment.
