The Lion Air Flight 610 Crash

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 29 October 2018 Lion Air Flight 610, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 flying from Jakarta's Soekarno–Hatta Airport to Pangkal Pinang on Bangka island, crashed into the Java Sea about 12 minutes after take-off. All 181 passengers and 8 crew, 189 people in total, were killed. It was the first major accident involving the 737 MAX. The report published in 2019 by Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee found that the MCAS flight-control software, fed by a faulty sensor, repeatedly pushed the aircraft's nose down, and that the crash resulted from a series of failures including Boeing's design and certification errors, the airline's maintenance shortcomings and pilot error. After a second crash of the same model in Ethiopia five months later, the 737 MAX was grounded worldwide.
