The "Cyanide Coffee" Case

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 6 January 2016, at a café in Jakarta's Grand Indonesia mall, 27-year-old Wayan Mirna Salihin fell ill shortly after drinking a Vietnamese iced coffee while meeting friends, and died on the way to hospital. Tests showed cyanide had been added to the drink. Her friend Jessica Wongso, who had arrived early and ordered the drinks, was arrested. Broadcast live for months, the trial drew huge attention in Indonesia. On 27 October 2016 the Central Jakarta District Court found her guilty and sentenced her to 20 years; her appeals were rejected. Wongso was released on parole in August 2024. A 2023 Netflix documentary reignited debate about the case.
