SINGAPORE — 2017 · Murder
The Bedok double murder
On 21 June 2017, an elderly couple aged 79 and 78 were killed in their home in Singapore's Bedok area. The suspect fled the country afterward and was apprehended in Indonesia. Because Indonesian law provides for its citizens to be tried domestically for crimes committed abroad, the defendant was not extradited to Singapore; the two countries' police forces coordinated to complete the case file. Tried in Indonesia in 2018, the defendant was found guilty of both murders and sentenced to life imprisonment; the sentence was reduced to 20 years on appeal. The case became a notable example in matters of cross-border jurisdiction.
