SINGAPORE — 1963 · Murder
The Sunny Ang case
In August 1963, a young woman disappeared during a diving trip off Singapore's Sisters' Islands and was never found. The investigation established that she had recently taken out a large accident insurance policy naming the man beside her as beneficiary, and that her diving equipment showed signs of deliberate tampering. Although her body was never recovered, in 1965 the court convicted the defendant of murder based solely on circumstantial evidence. The case entered legal history as one of the region's first major convictions without a body.
