JAKARTA — 2004 · Murder
Assassination of Munir Said Thalib
Munir Said Thalib, Indonesia's leading human rights defender, died on 7 September 2004 aboard a Garuda Indonesia flight from Jakarta to Amsterdam, after the Singapore stopover, while travelling to the Netherlands for graduate studies. A Dutch autopsy found arsenic poisoning. An off-duty Garuda pilot who was on the flight was sentenced to 20 years by the Supreme Court in 2008, and two other airline staff were convicted. A former intelligence official tried after evidence of the pilot's links to the intelligence agency was acquitted in 2008. Rights groups stress that those who ordered the murder have never been brought to justice.
