MANILA BAY — 2004 · Major Tragedy
The SuperFerry 14 Bombing
At around 23:00 on 26 February 2004 a bomb exploded aboard SuperFerry 14, which had left Manila for the southern islands, and the ensuing fire engulfed the ship. The ferry capsized in Manila Bay near Corregidor island. At least 116 people were killed, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in Philippine history and one of the deadliest acts of maritime terrorism in the world. Initially thought to be an accident, the blast was found by investigators to have been caused by explosives hidden inside a television set placed on board. The Abu Sayyaf group claimed responsibility; a member who confessed to planting the bomb was arrested. The attack was decisive in tightening maritime security across South-East Asia.
