The Resorts World Manila Attack

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Just after midnight on 2 June 2017 an armed man entered the Resorts World Manila casino and hotel complex in Pasay, Metro Manila. He fired into the air, set gaming tables and carpets on fire and stole a large quantity of casino chips. No one was killed by his gunfire, but toxic smoke from the burning furniture killed 37 people trapped in the casino and upper floors. The attacker later took his own life in a hotel room. Initially treated as a possible terrorist attack, it was found to be a robbery attempt by a former government employee with a gambling addiction and heavy debts. The casino's licence was temporarily suspended over security deficiencies.
