The Rizal Day Bombings

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On 30 December 2000, Rizal Day, which commemorates the Philippine national hero José Rizal, five bombs exploded within a few hours at different points across Metro Manila. The blasts struck a light-rail (LRT) train at Blumentritt station, a bus in Cubao, an area near Plaza Ferguson, the cargo area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport and a petrol station in Makati. The heaviest toll came on the LRT carriage, which exploded during rush hour. The attacks killed 22 people and injured about 100. Investigators linked them to militants connected to the South-East Asian Jemaah Islamiyah network. In January 2009 three defendants were convicted of taking part. It remains one of the deadliest coordinated bombings in Manila's modern history.
