MANILA — 2016 · Murder
The Jee Ick-Joo case
In October 2016, in the Philippines, South Korean businessman Jee Ick-Joo was abducted from his home by two police officers and killed. The most striking aspect of the case was that his body was found inside the headquarters of the country's national police force. Charges were filed for kidnapping, vehicle theft, and homicide. The officer identified as having planned the attack was acquitted at the first trial, but that ruling was overturned on appeal in 2024, resulting in a conviction for kidnapping and homicide. The case reignited debate over abuse within the Philippine police force.
