The Wilhelmus Geertman case

In July 2012, in the Philippines, Dutch activist Wilhelmus Geertman, who had run development programs in poor communities for more than 40 years, was killed. Before his death, Geertman had been supporting local communities in Aurora province in campaigns against mining projects, landlessness, illegal fishing, and illegal logging. Following the trial, the court sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment for murder.
